Course Description

This is a general qualification for a person engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment undertaking a range of tasks involving known routines and procedures, and taking some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Employment Opportunities

The Rail Safety Act 2012 and Rail Safety Legislation means all Rail Infrastructure personnel working within the rail sector must attain minimum competency standards prior to carrying out work within the rail corridor.

The Certificate II qualification provides for employment in the following roles:

  • Track Worker
  • Track Installer
  • Track Maintainer

Course Delivery

This course is delivered via:

  • Class Based – Face to Face

DP Learning@Home (virtual class via Zoom):

  • One day virtual class training per week via Zoom (Wednesday 6.00pm – 9.00pm for 26 weeks)
  • Hard copy workbooks
  • Simulated workshops/ practicals held at our training location (as timetabled)
  • The opportunity to attend weekly trainer-led study support sessions via Zoom for the duration of your course
  • Email and phone communication options with your trainer.

Study Program

Class Based (face to face): designed for new entrants

Regular classes will run from Brisbane (Slacks Creek) training location, providing you with the flexibility to fit in with your schedule. All classes are delivered by qualified, industry experienced Trainer Assessors who work closely with students to optimise their learning experience. Students will attend class five days per week (Mondays – Friday) followed by Vocational Placement  for on the job experience with an industry provider.

  • Five days’ classroom based training per week (8.30am – 4.30pm for 8 weeks)
  • The opportunity to attend trainer-led study support sessions every Wednesday (9:00am – 12:00pm) for the duration of your course
  • Industry placement of at least 120 hours

Course Entry Requirements

The target learners and entry requirements for this course must:

  • be over 15 years of age, and no longer attending secondary school
  • undertake Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Skills Indicator assessment questionnaire
  • ability to undertake vocational placement, which includes manual handling tasks
  • have technological skills to undertake computer/online work and have access to a computer and software with the following minimum specifications
  • Microsoft Windows XP, or later, or Mac OS X or above; Microsoft Office or equivalent and Adobe Acrobat Reader/Adobe Flash Player and up to date internet browser
Uniform Requirements

The following uniform requirements must be followed:

      • Steel-Cap Boots
      • Hi-Vis Orange Shirt/Vest
      • Long Black/Blue Pants
      • Sun-Smart for Outdoors (Wide Brim Hat, Sunscreen, Safety Glasses, Cold Water)

    To receive an award for this qualification Students are required to complete all units listed above as competent  within a period of 12 months.

    Students will be provided with all the Student training and assessment materials for each unit of competency required to complete the course

Fees & Funding
  • Fee For Service (not eligible for government funding)
    • A Full Fee paying student – total course fee $1950

    To commence a $250 deposit is required prior to commencing training and assessment, with weekly, fortnightly and monthly payment plans to pay the remaining fees.

    Queensland Government Funding
    Certificate 3 Guarantee Funding*, a Queensland Government Initiative

    The Certificate 3 Guarantee* supports eligible individuals to complete their first post-school certificate III qualification and increase your skills to move into employment, re-enter the workforce or advance your career. It also supports school students to access training and Queensland’s Year 12 graduates to transition to employment by providing free training in high priority qualifications.

    DP Training is able to offer Queensland Government funding to eligible students, under the Certificate 3 Guarantee subsidy.  If a person is eligible for funding under Certificate 3 Guarantee, the Queensland Government will subsidise the costs of their accredited training, although a student contribution fee will be required.

    Call DP Training to check if you meet the eligibility criteria or answer the questions below. The student contribution fee can be as little as $55 for a concession card holder or $85 for non-concession enrolment.
